Our Community Cleanups are a hands-on way to show pride in where we live and make a real, visible difference.

Honoring Detective Luis Alvarez

Lou Alvarez was more than a nationally recognized advocate for 9/11 first responders—he was one of our own.

A longtime Oceanside resident and retired NYPD detective, Lou spent months at Ground Zero following the September 11 attacks. Years later, after being diagnosed with cancer linked to his service at the World Trade Center site, he became a tireless voice for the thousands of first responders, survivors and families affected by 9/11-related illnesses.

In June 2019, just days before his death, Lou testified before Congress in support of permanently funding the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund. His courage and determination helped bring national attention to the ongoing needs of the 9/11 community and left a legacy that continues today.

Why This Park Matters

Lou Alvarez Park holds a special place in Oceanside because it honors a hometown hero who dedicated his life to serving others. It is more than a neighborhood park—it is a place where our community can gather, where children can play, and where Lou’s story and legacy can live on for future generations.

The Oceanside Community Warriors are proud to help care for and beautify the park that bears his name. By bringing neighbors together to maintain and improve this space, we are doing more than taking care of a park. We are honoring Lou, his family, and the values of service, courage and community that he represented.
